There are now several long term studies showing the relationship between benzodiazepines and dementia. Once upon a time (in the 70's) they were the largest group of psychotropic medications prescribed. They were thought to be safe and were over prescribed. It has been found that people who have been taking them for more than 3 years begin developing memory problems and are much more likely to develop dementia. While they are safe and effective drugs; it is very important to use them in the short term and not the long term.
