In a recent study published in Stroke, people who drank 1 or more per day had an almost 300% increase in the incidence of Alzheimer's disease and the same for ischemic stroke. This is not the case for natural sugar sweetened beverages (although that causes other issues).
In addition, they found that sugary drinks causes Neurobehavioral Changes. This includes making you more likely to binge eat and to do it repeatedly, thus explaining why people who drink artificially sweetened beverages are generally more obese.
